Quest 1 • Lesson 10
🌍 AI Ethics & Future
Congratulations! You've reached the final lesson of AI Quest 1. This lesson explores the ethical challenges and future possibilities of artificial intelligence.
⚖️ Key Ethical Principles
AI systems should be explainable – users should understand how decisions are made.
Someone must be responsible for AI outcomes – you can't blame the algorithm.
AI should not discriminate based on race, gender, age, or other protected attributes.
User data must be protected and used responsibly.
📋 Case Study: The COMPAS Recidivism Algorithm
COMPAS was a tool used by US courts to predict the likelihood of a criminal re‑offending. It was found to be biased against Black defendants – they were twice as likely to be falsely flagged as high‑risk compared to white defendants.
Key takeaway: Even well‑intentioned AI can perpetuate historical biases if the training data reflects societal inequalities.
💭 Interactive Ethical Dilemma
Scenario: You're building an AI system to screen job applicants. Your dataset is 90% male. The model learns to favour male candidates. What do you do?
🚀 The Future of AI
- AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) – AI that can perform any intellectual task that a human can. Still theoretical, but progress is accelerating.
- AI in Healthcare – diagnosing diseases, drug discovery, personalised treatment.
- AI in Climate – optimising energy use, predicting climate patterns, and designing sustainable solutions.
- AI and Work – automation of repetitive tasks, but also new roles (AI ethics, prompt engineering, AI trainers).
- AI Safety – ensuring AI systems are aligned with human values and cannot cause harm.
✨ Challenge: Write Your Ethical AI Statement
Write a short paragraph (50‑100 words) stating your personal commitment to building fair, transparent, and accountable AI systems.
💡 Example:
"I commit to building AI systems that are transparent, fair, and accountable. I will audit my data for bias, involve diverse stakeholders, and prioritise human well‑being over profit. I will never build AI that knowingly discriminates or harms."
