How to Get a Free Domain Name

A real domain name — not just a subdomain — costs money. But there are three legitimate ways to get one for free in 2026. Here's the honest truth about each.

⚠️ The honest truth: Freenom — the service that gave away free .tk and .ml domains for years — shut down in February 2024 after Meta sued it over phishing abuse. Roughly 12.6 million domains stopped resolving overnight. If any guide still tells you to "grab a free .tk domain," it's out of date. Here are the options that actually work in 2026.

🚫 What to Avoid

❌ "Free domain with hosting" offers

Hostinger, Wix, and Squarespace offer a "free domain" — but only if you buy their hosting plan ($3-14/month). It's not free; it's bundled. Over a year, you'll pay $40-170.

❌ .tk, .ml, .ga, .cf, .gq domains

These are free but unreliable. Meta, Google, and many email providers block them at the spam filter level. If you need to send email from your domain, avoid these.

❌ "Domain for $0.99" first-year deals

GoDaddy and others sell domains for $0.99 the first year, then charge $15-25/year after. It's not free — it's a trap. Read the renewal price before buying.

🔗 Connect Your Domain to Your Website

Once you have a domain, point it to your site. If you're using GitHub Pages:

1. Add the domain in GitHub

Repository → Settings → Pages
Under "Custom domain", enter your domain
Click Save

2. Configure DNS at your registrar

Add these A records for the root domain:

And a CNAME record for www:

www → yourusername.github.io

3. Enable HTTPS

Back in Settings → Pages, check "Enforce HTTPS". GitHub provisions a free SSL certificate within 24 hours.

🔧 Common Issues (and Fixes)

❌ "This domain is not available" on free registrars

Try a different extension. .dpdns.org has more availability than .us.kg. Add a number or middle initial to your name if your first choice is taken.

❌ Custom domain shows "DNS check unsuccessful" in GitHub

DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate. Use dnschecker.org to verify your A records are live worldwide. If they are, remove and re-add the domain in GitHub settings.

❌ "Enforce HTTPS" checkbox is greyed out

GitHub hasn't finished issuing your SSL certificate yet. Wait up to 24 hours and check again. If your domain is on a free TLD that GitHub doesn't recognize, HTTPS may not be available.

❌ Student Pack application rejected

Use your school email address if you have one. If not, upload a clear photo of your student ID with the expiry date visible. GitHub usually responds within 24-48 hours.

❌ Free domain stopped working after a few months

Some free registrars require manual renewal or become unstable. If reliability matters, switch to a paid domain ($8-12/year from Namecheap, Cloudflare, or Porkbun).

💡 My Honest Recommendation

If you're a student: Get the GitHub Student Pack. The .me domain is a real domain, plus you get Copilot Pro and $200 in cloud credits.

If you're not a student: Start with a GitHub Pages subdomain (yourname.github.io). It's free forever and reliable. When you're ready to look professional, buy a .com for $10/year — it's worth it.

💡 The real answer: A free subdomain is fine for learning. A $10/year .com is the right answer for anything serious. Don't overthink the free option — the goal is to start shipping, not to save $10.
